Signs You Have a Blocked Drain
A blocked drain announces itself through slow draining, a gurgling noise in another fixture, a sewer smell, and waste backing up into the lowest fixture. The kitchen sink tends to slow first, because it carries the most grease and food scraps.
Watch for these:
Slow draining
the sink, shower or laundry tub takes longer than usual to empty.
Gurgling elsewhere
a noise from the toilet or another drain when something empties, a sign that air is stuck in the line.
A sewer smell near a drain
waste is sitting in the pipe instead of moving through.
Water backing up
waste rising into a floor waste or shower when another fixture is used.
The overflow relief gully outside. The grated fitting near an outside wall spills first if the sewer line blocks, so wastewater goes into the yard instead of the house. Water pooling around that gully is a sign the line behind it is not flowing.

Private Drain or Utility Sewer Main
Your private drain runs from the fixtures inside the house out to where it joins the sewer main, and everything past that join belongs to Urban Utilities. That line decides who you call and who pays.
The split works like this:
Your side
the buried drain linking your taps, pans and floor wastes to the council sewer. Keeping that line sound and flowing is the owner's job under Queensland plumbing law.
The utility's side
the sewer main in the street and everything it connects to.
Roof water
rain from the roof belongs in stormwater, never in the sewer.
Shared drains
one buried line can serve two or more premises. If the owners cannot agree on fair arrangements for a blockage, the council may repair the line and charge each owner a share of the cost, recoverable as a debt.
Brisbane City Council holds house drainage plans that show where your private line runs, which helps when a blockage needs tracing.

Why Unblocking a Drain Is Licensed Work
A licensee does the clearing, because Queensland calls unblocking a sanitary pipe or drain minor work. A permit is not needed, and the QBCC gets no Form 4 for it.
The licence classes matter too:
Above ground
clearing a blocked fixture or pipe inside the building is minor work for a licensed plumber.
Below ground
work on the buried drainage is drainer work, a separate licence class for the pipes under the surface.
Rentals
on a rental property, a licensed person does the clearing and nothing needs registering.
A licensed person does the work to the codes and standards that apply, which protects an insurance claim if the drainage fails later. Most of what we pull out is grease and food scraps, hair, soap residue, wet wipes, and tree roots in the older clay lines.

Clearing the Outside Gully Grate
Two owner jobs are unregulated: wiping clean the ground-level grate that covers the drain trap, and fitting new caps on the inspection openings set at ground level. The rest of the clearing is licensed work.
While you wait for the plumber, three things help:
Keep the gully clear
sweep leaves and grit away from the overflow relief gully so it can spill outside if the line blocks.
Stop feeding the line
stop running water and flushing on the affected line, especially the toilet and the kitchen sink.
Leave the trap alone
the drain trap under the grate and the buried line past it are licensed work, not owner work.

Flat Ground, Wet Seasons and Repeat Blockages
Flat, creek-side ground shapes this suburb's drain problems. Near Cabbage Tree Creek, seeping water leaves silt at the low joints in a buried line, so a blockage we clear this wet season can build again by the next.
Streets like Station Road sit low in the creek flood planning area, and clearing yard drains and pits there before the summer storms saves repeat call-outs. Deagon Plumbing Services does that pre-storm check on booked visits.
A blocked toilet or a sink that will not drain can usually wait for a booked visit. Sewage rising inside the house cannot: our emergency plumber page lists what counts as urgent. For the fixtures themselves, our toilet repairs and kitchen sink pages cover the fixture-side work.

Questions We Get About Blocked Drains
Call (07) 3523 7172Do plumbers handle blocked drains?
Yes, plumbers handle blocked drains. Queensland calls unblocking a sanitary pipe or drain minor work, so a licensee has to do it, without a permit and without a Form 4. Drainage below ground level is drainer work, which our licensed plumbers cover.
Who fixes a blocked drain outside my Deagon house?
You look after the private drain from your taps, pans and floor wastes out to the point where it joins the council sewer. Urban Utilities maintains the sewer main from there. A blockage on your side of that join is yours to have cleared.
Where does my drain end and the sewer main start?
Your private drainage links each fixture in the building to one sewer connection, and everything past that point belongs to Urban Utilities. Brisbane City Council holds house drainage plans that show where your buried private line runs.
Is a blocked toilet an emergency for a tenant?
Yes, for a tenant in Queensland a blocked toilet is an emergency repair. Tenancy law lists a toilet that will not flush among the urgent repairs. Our emergency plumber page steps through what else cannot wait.
What makes drain clearing cost more or less in Deagon?
Two things drive the price: which fixture or line is blocked, and whether a simple blockage or pipe damage is behind it. Flat-rate pricing with a fixed quote before any work starts confirms the figure, so the price does not move once we begin.
